Nicolas Thébault and Marie-Caroline Thébault founded Anthracite, young and experienced French architectural design practice, based in Rennes, France. They has designed and built around sixty projects in the Greater West, some connected with “important developments” in their hometown. Their practice is set up on the development and realization of original “expressive neutrality” that could make them “banal” or unobtrusive. In practice, they treat each project as a pragmatic, specific and appropriate solution, resulting from a demanding synopsis of the goals of the programme, combined with context, site or landscape-related constraints. Anthracite’s buildings aim for “eco-friendly”, straightforward, solid architecture. The buildings created by Anthracite are dependent on the prominence given by the architects to the notion of “use” and also the qualitative experience of space and of the built environment.
