Shenzhen North Railway Station is the primary building of the Shenzhen North Transportation Hub which is an important node of Guangzhou-Shenzhen a^€“ Hong kong High Speed Train Line. The project is a complicated synthesis of multiple means of transportations. There are the Metro Line 4 and Line 6 elevated running across at the eastern end, parallel the rail and underneath, runs the New Zone Boulevard, the Metro Line 5 runs across underneath. The station connects to local and long distance buses, taxi services, car parks as well. The station has two main levels. The lower one has 11 station platforms, the upper level is a large space shelters the passengers' waiting area, the departure and arrival spaces. There is a 400 by 200 meters mega roof structure double layered with bands of aluminum panels and louvres for the main hall, The platforms are covered by canopies of steel rope-beam composite structural systems. The total building area is 182074 sq. meters, the project was completed in January 2012. The design is based on the spatial integration of the complicated system of the railway ,the metro and the other means of public transportations, to make the building fit into the urban fabric and create a landmark public space of the district. Based on the conditions of the site topology and the metro line 5 underneath and line 4,6 elevated up, the departure and arriving circulations are on the plaza level, which is the middle level between the metro lines, created an efficient and convenient transfer mode and enhances passengers' arriving experience. Despite the complexity of the construction engineering, the architectural design strived to make a clear statement that echoes the spirit of the city, which we believe, is the functional and social role the train stations have always played. The curving surface runs through, from east to west, the entire length of the roof of the big hall, unites the eastern and the western plazas. It wraps the elevated metro stations into a integrated east facade. The roof is cantilevered 65 meters to the east, presents an image and metaphor of "shelter' and defines a spacious portico space for the public plaza.
