Project description: Container Park is a 1000m² multidisciplinary R&D facility housing firms focusing on biotechnology, energy, materials, and software.
The first development project within the 50,000sqm masterplan repurposes 35 secondhand shipping containers. By repurposing locally acquired containers located 12km away in Izmir port, a dormant site in the masterplan plot with underused construction materials is upcycled (amounting to 110 tons of recycled materials.)
The geometry and structural affordances of the containers strongly influence the design approach.
The rigid stacking approach for containers is shifted in strategic occasions to create more spatial variation, terraces, and setbacks.
Building orientation is studied to maximize north-south exposure for daylight control, also to allow prevailing winds to create a cooling effect in summer.
The same proportions are used in designing the courtyard landscaping modulation to create a coherent design system across the site. The courtyard approach was imagined fostering interaction while pulling all circulation areas outdoors.
