Our designs had to provide for the school children with a minimal budget whilst minimizing the environmental impact on the immediate site and surrounding landscape.
Hand quarried local granite was used to create seating/balancing walls for the outdoor classrooms, placed in the shade of existing trees. The simple gesture of providing seating in the landscape has been very successful as the whole community is already congregating in these spaces - they have become central to the community's social interaction.
The planting palette uses only indigenous plants grown from locally procured seeds to ensure the design is as ecologically sensitive as possible.
The team designed educational graphics which tell the story of the design. These will be painted by local sign-writers and placed within the school grounds to help tell the story to the children using the schools.
