This clinic’s vivid rooflines and cantilevered volumes create a space conducive to offering psychiatric care to traumatized refugees.
The VITOS Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic provides therapy and psychological counseling to traumatized refugees and their families fleeing the turmoil in the Middle East. The clinic also promotes and supports their integration into the local community.
While the client originally enlisted the service of our office to design parking garages, the project evolved into something decidedly more ambitious. To accommodate the increasing number of displaced Syrians - among others - seeking refuge in Germany, the project now comprises the addition of two floors above the parking structure, providing adequate space for treatment services. This vertical extension also allows for the clinic to match the height of the surrounding buildings, establishing a coherent massing within the existing urban fabric.
At first, the long and narrow site, tucked between a street and railway tracks, was believed to be impossible to build on. To address those challenges, we designed a building that cantilevers in all directions, expanding significantly its usable floor area.
