Biography

RIBA Chartered Architect with offices in Athens and Berlin. Graduate from De Montfort University in Leicester, UK (BA Arch) and South Bank University in London, UK (PG Dip Arch).

Roula Kotsilati Architecture was founded in 2004 providing outstanding works of architecture and interior design. Roula’s work has international influences and focuses at the innovation of form and technology with highly crafted and detailed designs, always considering architecture on a spatial, social and ecological level. Light is the hallmark of her design approach, which certainly goes back to her Greek origin.

Roula’s portfolio includes a wide range of scales, building typology and budget, such as residential blocks, luxurious private residences, industrial buildings and affordable housing. Every project environment is unique and inspired from the understanding of the contexts and local characteristics that stimulate the imagination without imposing a specific style. Each project is a result of a story to be told, a new expression of the contemporary codes that aspires to go beyond the expectations of the client.

Project Description

This residential block of flats is situated in Mitte, the heart of Berlin and one of the most upcoming areas in the city since the fall of the "Berlin Wall". Mitte is considered one of the most exciting districts, a trendy social centre with great potential for development.

The block (1,944sqm) is conceived as a puzzle of different apartments and mezzanines that extends from 1st to the 5th floor. Spaces on the ground floor level are provided for commercial use. The top floor will become a penthouse with roof-garden. Each facade is a 3-dimensional window that catches the daylight, optimizing the privacy of the different apartments, while creating a unique and sculptural facade. The white coated precast concrete panels determine the appearance of both the interior and the exterior of the building. Optional external shading systems can ensure good indoor temperatures during the summer.
